What Causes Poor Stability Performance of Transformers?

Poor Dynamic Stability of Transformers and Its Root Causes

A transformer with poor dynamic stability cannot withstand various short-circuit faults. The main contributing factors are summarized as follows:

  1. In transformer structural design, calculating the electromagnetic forces acting on transformer windings merely by static mechanics fails to accurately reflect all stresses imposed by sudden short-circuit current surges.

  2. Improper conductor selection: designers tend to prioritize thermal performance while neglecting mechanical stress resistance.

  3. Insufficient axial clamping force applied to windings.

  4. Insufficient fixing supports for leads, unstable brackets, and defective lead welding joints.

  5. Lack of adequate support between inner windings and core limbs.
